Tom Weigel, M.D.

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Tom Weigel is Chief Medical Officer of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont. 

With more than a decade of leadership experience spanning health plans, hospitals, clinical programs, and state government, he leads clinical strategies across medical management, care management, quality, population health, and pharmacy. He is particularly committed to improving health outcomes, integrating physical and mental healthcare, advancing the responsible use of data and technology, and making healthcare more affordable, accessible, and responsive to the needs of Vermonters.

Before joining Blue Cross VT, Dr. Weigel served as Medical Director at the Vermont Agency of Human Services, where he worked on payment reform, quality measurement, and improvements in clinical care.

Earlier in his career, at McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, he helped design and develop a novel electronic medical record, built a patient-reported outcomes platform that reached more than 13,000 patients, and served as clinical lead for an Epic implementation spanning 18 treatment programs and seven satellite sites.

Dr. Weigel earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School and his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He also completed psychiatry training at Massachusetts General Hospital and child psychiatry training at Boston Children’s Hospital, both affiliated with Harvard Medical School. 
An avid skier and mountain biker, Dr. Weigel serves on the board of Mad River Riders. The Mad River Valley is home to his family, where they live on a small farm.
