Affordability Matters: Why Our Health Care Future Depends on Proactive Care
When we talk about health care affordability, the conversation often starts with costs—but the real transformation begins with prevention.

When we talk about health care affordability, the conversation often starts with costs—but the real transformation begins with prevention.
At Blue Cross VT, we believe that Vermonters should have the tools and support to stay healthy—not just access to treatment after they’re sick. That’s why we’ve made preventive care a cornerstone of our mission to deliver more affordable, accessible, and sustainable care.
Why Prevention Matters More Than Ever
The cost of care in Vermont is unsustainable. But what often gets lost in the discussion is that preventive care is one of the most effective, scalable solutions we have.
Consider this:
- Chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease are responsible for a large share of health care spending, but many are preventable or manageable with early intervention.
- Skipping routine screenings or check-ups often leads to late diagnosis, higher treatment costs, and worse outcomes.
- Mental health needs are rising, yet many Vermonters still struggle to access timely, affordable support.
We must flip the script from reactive care to proactive care. From treating illness to supporting wellness.
What We’re Doing to Make Prevention Possible
As Vermont’s only non-profit health plan, we’re investing in programs and partnerships that help keep Vermonters healthy and reduce avoidable costs across the system:
- Free preventive screenings to catch issues early and wellness tools to promote lifelong health
- A robust worksite wellness program to help eligible businesses improve the health and wellbeing of their employees
- Expanded telehealth services, including over 625,000 mental health and medical visits in 2024, to improve access and reduce barriers
- Home drug infusion therapy to lower hospital exposure and costs
- Access to our registered nurses and licensed clinicians for one-to-one support with your health needs
This work is about more than benefits. It’s about better outcomes. It’s about helping people stay healthy, avoid unnecessary hospital visits, and keep their lives on track.
The Health of Our Communities Depends on It
Prevention is more than a health strategy, it’s personal. The ability to stay healthy affects every part of your life: your family, your work, your mental well-being, and your financial future.
Prevention results in fewer claims, greater productivity, and stronger teams for employers—while giving families peace of mind and protection from unexpected health care costs. It’s a sustainable direction for the future of health care. But prevention only works if people can access and trust it. While we don't deliver care, we help make preventive services easier to understand, plan for, and prioritize.
Looking Ahead
We’re committed to creating a future where Vermonters don’t just get by—they thrive with the care and support they deserve. That means expanding preventive services, breaking down barriers to access, and continuing to put people before profits. The cost crisis is real—and while the solutions are complex, we believe progress is possible. We’re advocating for change, practical steps forward, and collaborating with partners to make health care more affordable for everyone.
